A Sydney teen with a previously undetected — and fairly common — heart condition was rushed to hospital on two separate occasions after drinking Red Bull.

Her story is one of many sent in by ninemsn readers who have had serious health problems after consuming energy drinks, which are currently sold in Australia without labels carrying clear health warnings.

Alicia Franklin was first hospitalised after an incident a few months short of her 18th birthday, when she was at a party, looking after an intoxicated friend.

After going to the hospital once, why drink them again!

Red Bull and indeed most of these energy drinks are essentially Diabetes in a can. Drink at your own risk!

I have never tried one of these drinks but I work with a young man who drinks this stuff all day. Cup of tea or coffee is enough for me.

I've never drank any - I don't like feeling jittery and don't want to consume anything that would make me feel that way. I've heard that they contain massive amounts of caffine and another ingredient, guarana. Now, I don't know about Red Bull, but I know others do contain this. Here are some side effects:

Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome when using Guarana:

Anxiety; diarrhea; headache; increased urination; nausea; nervousness; shakiness; tremors; trouble sleeping; upset stomach; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Guarana:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); agitation; irregular heartbeat; seizures.

I've heard about these and I really don't think it's worth it.

Stop The Hypocrisy

I do like my Monster energy drink (3 per week) and 5-Hour Energy shot (about the same). Sometimes, coffee just doesn't get the job done. I have heart issues but not from these drinks (or so my cardiologist says - he even encouraged me to keep drinking them because they're one of the few ways I get any exercise).

I have been forbidden to consume any of these drinks. I am allowed only one cup of half caf coffee per day. I have HCM, Tachycardia, and a messed up tricuspid valve. A few sips of one of those drinks would probably kill me.

I prefer not being hyper and nervous.

What are vodka red bulls? Is that vodka shots mixed in with the red bull? Sounds like something that would give me the instant gag reflex..

Yes, Vodka Red Bulls are essentially Vodka mixed with a can of Red Bull. However, knowing from experience, the only reason most drink these is because the Vodka is a downer and the Red Bull is an upper so therefore, you will not get the sleepy effects of alcohol, instead you will have somewhat of a hyper feeling from the Red Bull. Although, for the record, I primarily drank these during my tour in Germany. And they do severely dehydrate you. Not something I am appealed to anymore.
